SONY DSCDuring our half term tour of the south coast, we stopped off at the Beaulieu Motor Museum, near Southampton.

Neither of us has the slightest interest in looking at old bangers, but in the leaflet the gardens looked quite interesting, as did the house.

What swung it was getting in free because we are menbers of the Historic Houses Association. Otherwise, it would have cost us 25 quid! Each! I think the concession stopped soon after our visit.

It being February, crowds there were not. In fact, I think we were the only people going around the house. We don't always bother with the house if we are there to see a garden, but I'm glad we did because the place turned out to be quite interesting. It's called Palace House and was once the gatehouse to Beaulieu Abbey.

The 800 year old Abbey was founded by King John in the 13th Century before being destroyed on the orders of King Henry VIII in 1538. If Palace House was just the gatehouse, think what a magnificence the abbey must have been. Some say good old King Henry...
