A gloomy end to a gloomy year. Let's hope for a better 2021. Although, strictly speaking, we weren't locked down, we might as well have been. Restrictions on household numbers effectively kiboshed...

BordeHill 015We visited Borde Hill Garden on a lovely sunny Friday morning. The estate is huge and you could easily spend an entire day exploring; we only saw a fraction.

I loved the Italian Garden and the various dells, and of course the Victorian Greenhouses. When we win the Lottery and buy our country estate, I will build a vast lean-to greenhouse (heated in winter by wind/solar) against the wall of the obligatory walled garden, and just potter.

Borde Hill is definitely worth a visit if you are in the Haywards Heath area.

Bring sandwiches and a flask. The least impressive feature was the Gardener's Rest cafe, which was more like a tea bar and didn't have a lot to offer by way of refreshments. Late in the season, perhaps.

This is what they say about themselves on their website:

"Listed by English Heritage as being of Grade II* historic importance and set within 383 acres of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the High Weald, Borde Hill is of national botanical importance and features one of the largest collections of privately owned champion trees in the UK, with over 70 specimens."
