If ever you are near York and have a spare afternoon, then I cannot recommend this garden highly enough (if you like gardens, of course). What do I love about Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens?...

Grim times. People scared of what they see on the telly, with no real idea of what is going on. October seems to be a bit of a lull before Covid cases begin to ramp up again over the winter. Another lockdown ahead? Not over the holiday, please.

Locally, I must say most people are following the basic rules about mask-wearing and social distancing. Unmasked people in the Coop get a very hard stare.

If you pass people in the street, any overheard snatches of conversation are invariably centred on Covid. It's fairly normal for people to cross the road rather than walk past you. On a Thursday evening at 8pm. sheepishly we stand on the doorstep and clap for carers. I hope it cheers them up but actually I'm sure carers would much rather have a decent pay rise.

Schools are open, sort of, but millions are still on furlough or working from home. I make the most of a daily walk, mooching around silent streets, thinking about what I might do next now I have quit teaching..

We have been seeking out cat cafes for some time now. Our first was Mog on the Tyne, in Newcastle (where else?), which we first visited in 2014. I believe it is still going strong. I first heard...
